the modern saloon

Every once in a while, you just need a night out with your best girlfriends. Things happen during the week where you just need to rant about, gossip, or just drink away. Last, last Friday was one of those nights.

A, S, and I wanted to try a restaurant that none of us had ever eaten at before. One of the only ones left on King West was Weslodge.

It was like being in a dark bar from the days of the Old West, with just a smidge of that English pub feel, all wrapped together in a big refined box. The walls were decorated with the various heads of different types of game, and the waiters were dressed in vests with leather gun holsters strapped on tight.

I decided to bring my J1 this time, but it took worse pictures in the dark than my iPhone did. I didn't want to use flash either, so we're back to these dark, poorly lighted photos. SORRY. Maybe I just need to stop eating in such dark restaurants...

Our waiter, who also happened to be a friend of S from high school, animatedly broke down the menu to let us know what their best dishes were.

Apparently the scotch egg is somewhat of a hot commodity here, and a must try if you ever visit.

chorizo, tomato jam, black truffle

For our main, we split the 38oz (I think) Tomahawk Steak. This baby was aged for a certain number of weeks (can't remember the exact number) and cooked to perfection. We ordered it in medium-rare, and although I normally liked my meat done medium, this was delicious and seasoned beautifully. A little on the pricey side but well worth it.

Look at the size of that bone!

We couldn't just eat the steak alone, so we ordered a few sides to go with it.

French Beans - miso ginger, toasted cashews, garlic chips

Thrice Cooked Fries, house ketchup

We weren't quite finished chit-chatting yet, so we ordered some dessert to prolong our stay.

Sticky Cake -

toffee caramel, brulee figs, ginger ice cream

And the most important dish of the night... Behold, the Ice Cream Bar! Super interesting name, I know. BUT, just look at it. Look at the plating. So pretty! But that's not even the best part, because this ice cream is like no other. Why?  Because it has corn cookies on it, avocado, mango, and even jalapeno (say whhhat)! This ice cream bar was like an explosion of flavours in your mouth. Fireworks, even.

After dinner we headed back to S's place where we popped some bubbly and continued our GNO with some Photobooth camwhoring. We were supposed to stop by somewhere else for drinks but clearly our silly sides got to us and we decided to call it a night and stay in instead. Overall a super fun and much needed night!
